Marine Planning
The Northland Regional Council has an active interest in marine conservation and planning for the coastal area. Policy and planning regulations are described in detail in the 'Northland Regional Council Coastal Plan'. This document can viewed at the Council offices, or at local libraries.
In 2002 the Council began 'Project Aquaculture'. Project Aquaculture set out to investigate where it might be possible and desirable to develop new aquaculture areas for Northland. As part of this work the Council put together a set of marine planning maps which detailed a wide range of existing management zones and activities in the coastal area as well as indicating other information which is relevant to planning the use of coastal space. This set of maps is referred to as the 'Draft Constraints Maps'. The information held in these maps is highly relevant and useful to any marine planning context, so this map system has been included in this CD.
