Whangarei Harbour Marine Reserve

The Whangarei Harbour Marine Reserve came into being on the 18th of October 2006 and comprises two sites - Waikaraka and around Motukaroro/Passage Island at Reotahi. The combined area of both sites is approximately 253.7 hectares or 2.54% of the Whangarei Harbour.
The proposal for the two reserves was completed by students at Whangarei's Kamo High School, under the guidance of teacher Warren Farrelly. Thirteen consecutive years of students worked on the proposal, before the reserve was finally opened in 2006.
