plate coral
Image by Roger Grace, published on 30/12/2009
The Kermadec Islands support New Zealand's only reef-building corals, however they do not grow fast enough, nor abudant enough to form coral reefs. They live at the limit of their temperature tolorance. Dense kelp forests found in other parts of NZ waters are absent from the Kermadecs.
