NZ Fur Seal
Image by Roger Grace, published on 30/07/2007
Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve. NZ Fur Seals or Kekeno (Arctocephalus forsteri) are much smaller than the NZ Sea Lion and have a more pointed snout. Historically NZ Fur Seals have been ruthlessly hunted for their fur and consequentially numbers have dwindled. They are now protected in NZ, and breed on the subantarctic islands, off the coast of the South Island, on Stewart Islands and the Chathams.
