Leatherjackets in the Sponge Garden at Motukaroro

Leatherjackets in the Sponge Garden at Motukaroro
Image by Roger Grace, published on 30/07/2007

Whangarei Harbour Marine Reserve - Motukaroro. The constant supply of nutrients on strong tidal currents make this reserve an ideal habitat for many filter feeding species. It is also home to around 50 different species of reef fish including these Leatherjackets. Leatherjackets will eat almost anything, including sponges and corals, which makes them an important part of the ecosystem as they clear room on the reef for new life to settle and grow, thus stimulating biodiversity.
