Marine Issues Unit Plan
Author(s): Marea Neill
This is a short introduction to Marine Science topic for the students where they hopefully become emotionally engaged in marine issues and therefore hopefully interested in helping. It could also be done at the end of a course. Most of the students loved getting up in the front of the classroom and being the teacher!
Marine Issues Assignment
Author(s): Marea Neill
This document was designed to be used with the Marine Issues Unit Plan. The assignment basically involves the students researching about a chosen marine issue. This is prior knowledge for the teacher to see what research skills the students have already and to introduce other possible sources of research which they may not have used before like ringing a Council to get information or ringing a Eco-friendly Tour provider. It is great for the students communication skills.
Marine Diversity Unit Plan
Author(s): Marea Neill
This covers marine biology and some sampling techniques. The assessment for this unit is Bio 1.4 which compares the inter-tidal community with the sub-tidal community. The task which was used for this Achievement Standard is also available on-line.
Issues action flowchart
Author(s): Marea Neill
Some courses cover content ABOUT the marine environment, some manage to cover content IN the marine environment and a few manage to put into action a project FOR the marine environment. This flowchart helps students come up with what they could do in terms of ACTION about a particular issue. Forms of ACTION could simply be writing a letter to the council about sedimentation at a building site or organising a beach clean up. There are so many possibilities.
Investigation on Sedimentation

This is a lab experiment which investigates the effect that run off has on water clarity. The students loved this experiment as they got to go outside!
Info on Rocky Shore Species

This covers general information about Rocky Shore species. It can be used as a resource for several Achievement Standards.
Biology 1.4 90164
Author(s): Marea Neill
The students love this Achievement Standard as they get to go snorkelling. Obviously its best to do this assessment in Term 1 when the water has warmed up as a result of summer. It is important that they know how to use the datasheets and how to graph their data and then interpret it!
Aquaculture Assignment
Author(s): Marea Neill
The students have to chose a farmed species and find out about the biology of the species and its farming techniques. It is a good assignment as an introduction to Aquaculture.
