Shellfish shock for Whangarei harbour

Unsafe levels of bacteria have forced health authorities to suspend harvesting of cockles in the Whangarei Harbour. Recent tests have shown a high level of faecal bacteria at Snake Bank.

Northland District Health Board spokeswoman Elizabeth Watts says all harvesting has been suspended indefinitely. She says authorities can’t predict or manage the pollution because they do not yet know what is causing it.

Ms Watts says in the meantime members of the public should not collect cockles from any area of the Whangarei Harbour.
