National Marine Education Wananga - Conference
Whakapaumahara Marae, Whananaki North Rd, Whangarei, Northland
Wednesday 8th – Friday10th October, 2008
Theme: Action for the marine environment
Purpose: Professional development and networking opportunity for those interested in the marine environment, community relations, marine & environmental educators & to ensure strong delivery of the EMR concept around NZ.
Objectives:
• Share stories about EMR delivery outcomes from around the country
• Provide a forum for marine educators to talk about marine education initiatives & projects
• To provide professional development (snorkeling, expert speakers)
• To provide a forum to discuss ideas for action for the marine environment.
Programme:
Day 1:
11.30am Registration give out name tags and EMR wananga kete of information – participants to contact Samara Nicholas if you have something you would like to be included in info kete
12pm Powhiri
- Lunch
1.30pm Introductions – what people want from wananga
2.30pm EMR programme OUTCOMES presentation input from around the country and presentation from students – action examples
4.00pm Cupa Tea
4.30pm Show & tell - What we are all doing 10 min presentations about different marine education resources or projects – a chance to gain feedback on your project or to share something worthwhile
6pm Keynote speaker – Dr Ingrid Visser – action for Orca
7pm Dinner
8pm Marine education and conservation discussion panel – ask the experts
Day 2
7.00am Breakfast
8.00am Facilitated session by Sioux Campbell ‘Ocean Café’ including what we are doing in marine education, what’s working, what’s not, where we want to go in the future, ideas for ACTION, ideas for Seaweek ’09, using the new curriculum (with Team Solutions - Julie Holt ) and Kaitiakitanga
10am Cupa Tea
10.30am ‘Ocean Café continues
12.00pm Lunch
1.00pm Field trips –
Option 1
Professional development – gain snorkel unit standards – 4383 – Snorkel Dive with Safety and 8296 - instruct clients in Snorkel Diving (7 credits total). To be conducted on the open coast, estuary or Whangarei pools, depending on weather. Wetsuits and equipment provided. Extra homework required for sign off
Option 2
Learn about two fantastic environmental education initiatives – the Drains to Harbour stormwater education programme - stencil a drain or two and get wet with the Whitebait Connection programme in the river. Visit and learn about the He Kakano community plant nursery.
5.30pm warm up with showers
6pm Head to Beach
6.30pm Gourmet BBQ and fire on the beach
– everyone to bring a song to sing & teach everyone else
9pm Marine movies back at the marae
Day 3
7am Breakfast & clean up
8am Poroporoaki
8.30am Leave for Tutukaka
10am Depart for Poor Knights on Perfect Day with Dive! Tutukaka
11am Tour of the Knights & snorkel
- Dr Roger Grace to lead discussions on marine monitoring
- Manta boarding activity
Closing comments on way back to marina - karakia
4.30pm at Tutukaka marina
Hot chips at Schnapper Rock, Tutukaka (refreshments not included)
NOTE: The above is an evolving programme and open to your suggestions
What to bring: Your own bedding for the marae, warm clothes, gumboots/waders for field trips, your waiata, your show & tell item (please contact Samara if you wish to have a resource included in info kete and to confirm your time slot for the show & tell). Snorkel equipment and wetsuits if you have your own and not traveling by plane.
Travel:
Participants must arrange own flights & travel arrangements etc
A van will be provided from the airport on the Wednesday morning and will do a drop off on Friday night.
Some funding is available to assist existing or potential EMR regional coordinators. Contact EMR director, Samara Nicholas for eligibility details.
Food requirements: All meals provided in registration fee, all food will be vegetarian with some seafood options, please let us know if you have additional requirements such as gluten free or vegan etc
Space on this special marine education wananga is limited to 50 people, so be in quick!!!!
