Saturday 26th April 2014- Wellington – Te Whanganui-a-tara Kuratini Marae, Massey University, Wallace St, Mt Cook, Wellington

The National Marine and Freshwater education Wananga – Conference is being held this year in Wellington, with focus on ‘Communicating science for marine and freshwater conservation ACTION!’  We would like to extend an invitation to the community to attend Keynote presentations by;

Rapid fire sea themed entertainment

Rapid fire sea themed entertainment is planned for the Northland launch event on 26th February for Seaweek 2014!
The Experiencing Marine Reserves programme and Pecha Kucha (PK) Whangarei are organising the Seaweek PK night on 26th February at the Old library on Rust Ave, Whangarei. There will be a diversity of 10 presenters, each have 20 slides and 20 seconds per slide. Doors and bar open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start, $5 entry. There will also be marine displays and information.

Free Community Guided Snorkel Days underway

Free Community Guided Snorkel Days underway!

Over 150 people have attended the series of popular free Community Guided Snorkel Days organised by Experiencing Marine Reserves (EMR) so far this summer.  The next snorkel day at Reotahi is on Saturday the 8th February.

“These events are a great way for the community of all ages to experience and enjoy their local marine environment while raising awareness about this marine reserve, which was proposed by students at Kamo High School and established in 2006 ” says Samara Nicholas

People are often surprised by the variety of marine life in the Whangarei Harbour Marine Reserve; at last weekend’s snorkel day we had a family travel from Auckland to attend, along with a student from the Kamo High School class of 1990, the year that initiated the marine reserve proposal.

A Kermadec Ocean Sanctuary

A Kermadec Ocean Sanctuary

The PEW Charitable Trusts, WWF and Forest and Bird are actively campaigning towards the establishment of a Kermadec Ocean Sanctuary, which would see the current marine reserve extended to include a 620,000 square kilometre no-take zone and if successful would be one of the largest marine reserves in the world.
