Magnificent sponges at Motukaroro Island, Whangarei Harbour Marine Reserve

Before 2007 drew to a close, I was lucky enough to dive at Motukaroro Island with the infamous Vince Kerr. Apparently dives here are often troubleson due to some crazy currents but we managed to get to the bottom of what is affectionaltely known as ‘the hole’ at a staggering 31msw!!! I thought I would share some of the images of the sponges I took as they were simply stunning, so colourful and plentiful despite the lack of natural light. Let me know what you think.

Lovely to see lots of sponges up there as thats what I work on down here in Wellington! The golfball sponges are a species of Tethya in the first photo.
