Vince is a biologist with a background in environmental education, and conservation management. He has been an active marine conservation campaigner for many years. Vince's resource archive, which includes hundreds of photos, videos and reports, was one of the catalysts for the founding of MarineNZ. Vince aims to bring together the vast range of marine resources out there and make them accessible to every New Zealander.

Samara Nicholas - Publisher
Samara is the Director and National Coordinator of Experiencing Marine Reserves (EMR). She was recognised as one of New Zealand's emerging leaders in 2005, when she was awarded the inaugural Sir Peter Blake Leadership award. Samara has an academic background in Applied Science and was head girl at Kamo High School, where she played a key role in the Kamo High School marine reserve proposal. The proposal went on to become the Whangarei Harbour Marine Reserve in October 2006.

Kim is the Whangarei District Coordinator for the Experiencing Marine Reserves (EMR) programme, and is also a trustee of the Mountains To Sea Conservation Trust. Kim is an experienced SCUBA diver and snorkelling instructor. Her academic background is in Environmental Management, Conservation, Administration and Computing.

Roger is one of New Zealand's great underwater photographers, and many of his photos can now be seen for the first time in MarineNZ. He is also a well known scientist, and has published many reports on the state of our marine environment. Roger often works as a photographer for the Greenpeace ship, Rainbow Warrior and has supported marine conservation in New Zealand for decades.

Warren is well known diver and photographer and was the key figure on the staff of Kamo High School who supported the students and the concept behind the creation of the Kamo High School marine reserve. He has taken thousands of underwater photographs over the years and has kindly agreed to let us display them on this site.

 

Origins of MarineNZ

This website was Vince Kerr's inititive supported by the Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust trustees, his daughters Jess & Arla, Fix Creative and Iain Urquhart (and his company Venture Group at time of creation) , MarineNZ  went live in 2007. Initial seed sponsors were the Department of Conservation, WWF-NZ and the Lion Foundation. Current funding for maintaining the MarineNZ site has come from the Tindall Foundation and the Lion Foundation in 2011.

Arla and Jessica worked for the Trust in Summer jobs while on University break and did the concept work in the beginning and prepared a funding prospectus for the project. Arla and Jessica also hailed from Kamo High School and played roles in the Whangarei Harbour marine reserve campaign.

Sasha Webb & Aaron Moore - Creative Consultants
Sasha and Aaron together form Fix Creative, a small creative agency based in Whangarei. Sasha's strengths lie in editorial, communications and marketing. She too worked on the Kamo High School marine reserve proposal. She edited the original MarineNZ content.

Aaron is a skilled graphic designer. He was Art Director for Hamilton agency Verdict before he returned to Whangarei with his family. He now heads Fix Creative with Sasha. Aaron designed the MarineNZ logo.

Iain Urquhart - Web Consultant
Iain from jam ditgital media, a specialist web design and hosting company in Whangarei.  Iain has been responsible for the design and construction of the MarineNZ site.
