Whangarei Drains-to-Harbour stormwater programme for schools

Because the EMR programme is most active in Northland during the summer, it was considered a natural progression for its coordinators to move into stormwater issues during the winter.  EMR looks forward to continuing the delivery of the DTH programme in Whangarei under the auspices of the Mountains to Sea conservation Trust, and offering assistance to other regions that wish to use the resources that EMR has developed with the Whangarei District Council (WDC).

The programme involves the provision of a coordinator, who delivers a classroom workshop on local stormwater issues, and a field trip to a local stream to find out more about where stormwater ends up, the health of their local fresh waterway what lives in fresh waterways.  The coordinator then takes students out into the community where they stencil the 'Drains-to-Harbour - Rainwater Only' message near stormwater drains to spread the word.

The programme aims to raise community awareness around the connection between our drains and our waterways and what we can all do to minimise stormwater pollution.
